Look at the entry status before changing anything.
If a page is marked Unknown, the problem may be the destination—not your computer. As of October 10, 2026, the source-list Moon, Kino der Toten, and Cheese Cube addresses redirect to the same unrelated domain; the Skate Rust domain shows an unrelated storefront; the Unreal Tournament link identifies Urban Terror; Hedgewars has a certificate mismatch; and the GTA V entry is only an archive snapshot.
Do not troubleshoot those records by disabling security, forcing a certificate, or downloading a launcher. Start from the directory status. Continue only when the hostname and current project identity match the detail page.
A browser warning, unrelated store, surprise redirect, or executable request is a source problem. It is not a graphics setting to work around.
Separate loading, rendering, and input.
- Wait for the documented first load. Return to Castle Wolfenstein describes roughly 380 MB; PES 6 describes a substantial browser download. A quiet tab can still be fetching or compiling.
- Keep the tab visible. Phones and laptops can suspend background work, especially in battery-saving mode.
- Check hardware acceleration. WebGL projects need a working graphics context. Update the browser and GPU driver through normal operating-system channels.
- Try one clean reload. If a new build conflicts with cached data, a normal reload may help. Do not repeatedly erase storage on projects that imported large owned files.
- Check the project console only if you understand it. A missing asset or WebGL error is useful evidence; random console commands copied from a stranger are not.
If a menu appears but keyboard and mouse do nothing, click the game surface once so it can request focus or pointer lock. That is an input issue, not a rendering failure.
Match the exact format required by the project.
Needs Files projects fail when the browser cannot find, read, or store the expected data. Halo CE expects an Xbox XISO in its documented format. Vice City expects a prepared game.tar.gz. WebXash expects valve or cstrike data. Diablo Web distinguishes spawn.mpq from DIABDAT.MPQ.
- Use files from a copy you own and preserve the original outside the browser.
- Check spelling, capitalization, archive structure, and file version against the project repository.
- Allow persistent site storage and avoid private browsing for large imports.
- Do not use an unknown prepacked asset bundle to “fix” a missing-file message.
- If the project updated, confirm that older converted data is still supported before rebuilding it.
Use the project’s supported environment.
Update the browser, keep JavaScript and WebAssembly enabled under normal settings, and allow first-party storage. Disable aggressive content blocking for that site only if you trust the project and the blocker is clearly stopping first-party scripts—not to bypass malware, certificate, or download warnings.
Cross-origin isolation, SharedArrayBuffer, WebGL 2, WebGPU, pointer lock, gamepad access, and persistent storage are separate capabilities. A device can support some and not others. Mobile browsers also apply stricter memory and background-tab limits. When a project explicitly recommends desktop Chrome, as the RTCW page does, treat that as project guidance rather than a universal rule for every entry.
Open the same project in a fresh standard profile with no imported files. If the landing page fails there too, the host or browser capability is more likely than corrupt game data.
The browser capability check reports common API signals locally. It can identify a missing WebGL 2 or isolation signal, but it cannot certify that a particular project works.
Domains can outlive the lists that mention them.
Compare the address bar with the hostname recorded on the game page. A redirect can be legitimate, but it needs a project-owned explanation. When a domain shows a different product, an unrelated store, a generic parking page, a certificate mismatch, or an archive, do not treat the original X label as current proof.
The safe next step is to look for a project repository, developer page, or corrected source post. Search by the project’s real name rather than downloading a mirror. The source and status page explains why we keep broken records visible without turning them into play buttons.
Match the symptom to the next safe step.
| Symptom | Likely layer | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Unrelated page or store | Changed destination | Stop; use the source record and wait for a corrected project link. |
| Certificate warning | TLS / host identity | Do not bypass it. Close the page. |
| Loader stays at one percentage | Network, host, memory, or missing asset | Wait once, check project status, then retry later on a stable connection. |
| Canvas is black but audio plays | Graphics / WebGL | Update the browser, check hardware acceleration, and try a supported browser. |
| “File not found” after import | Wrong archive structure or version | Compare exact filename and folder layout with the project repository. |
| Works until browser restart | Storage was temporary or cleared | Allow persistent first-party storage and avoid private mode. |
| Menu loads; controls do not | Focus, pointer lock, or input mapping | Click the canvas, connect the controller first, and read project bindings. |
| Multiplayer menu works; server does not | External server or transport | Check project server status; do not change graphics settings. |
